About this Diskette
This disk contains the latest "ESS 1688 Plug and Play" drivers for Windows 95.
All Windows 95 drivers are found in the root directory of the diskette.  This
disk also contains the SETUP program for Windows 3.1 Audio Driver and the Media
Rack Multimedia Software.

Windows 95 Installation
Installation Outline --
1) Install the Win95 audio driver first.
2) Run SETUP.EXE from the diskette to install the MEDIA RACK software.
* Warning - Do not run W31SETUP.EXE from Windows 95.

Installation of ESS 1688 Plug and Play Win95 Audio Driver
All Windows 95 drivers are found in the root directory of the diskette.
Quick Installation Guide
1. Please Install Windows 95 Operating System first.
2. Install the Plug and Play sound card into your computer.
3. Boot Up Windows 95.
4. Usually, a message will tell you that the ESS 1688 Plug and Play sound card
   was detected.
5. Always select Manufacturer Diskette for drivers updates. (Drivers provided by
   Microsoft or Windows 95 will not work)
6. Insert this diskette into the floppy drive and select the ESS 1688 Plug and
   Play driver to install.
7. Once the driver is installed, double check that the driver is working in the
   Device Manager at SYSTEM PROPERTIES.
8. The Win95 Audio driver is always present automatically with the best
   configuration possible for your sound card.
9. Usually the settings is set to :-
	Address = 220 Hex
	IRQ = 5 or 7
	DMA = 1
	MPU401 = 330 Hex
  IDE Port Address = Secondary or Tertiary*.
			*Tertiary port is available on newer model of the PnP sound card.

Windows 3.1 or Windows For Workgroup 3.11 Installation
1) Run SETUP.EXE from the diskette.
2) The installation program will be link to run W31SETUP.EXE for Windowns 3.1
   Driver Installation.
3) ** You need to manually edit CONFIG.SYS and add this line
   "MPNP.EXE /w=e /c=e" if you are connecting and IDE CD-ROM drive to the
    sound card.

PLAYING MSDOS Sound Blaster Compatible Games in normal MSDOS 7 Environment.
a) If you are playing MSDOS games in Windows 95 environment, no special step
   is required to take. Install and run you games normally.
b) If you are playing MSDOS games in MSDOS 7 environment, you have to run a
   specific DOS utilities before you start running your game. Otherwise, your
   sound card might not work properly!!!
Running games in MSDOS 7
1. Getting in MSDOS 7 environmet requires you to press F8 when your system boots
   up. Select "Command Prompt only" menu which is usually numbered 6 or 5.
2. Before you run your favorite games, you have to run a DOS Batch file first.
   This batch file is name "DOSPNP.BAT". Type "DOSPNP" from command prompt
   before starting your game.

More About ESSCFG, ESSVOL, and MPNP

MPNP.EXE is a MSDOS device driver to initialize the sound card for proper
operation to Windows 95. It can also configure your sound card properly for
playing games with Sound Blaster PRO compability by defining the Address, IRQ,
DMA, etc...

MPNP.EXE can be loaded as a device in CONFIG.SYS. MPNP.EXE can also be run from
MSDOS.
** WARNING, DO NOT RUN MPNP.EXE IN MSDOS BOX IN WINDOWS 95 **

/w:[e/d]    e=enable card, d=disable card -- ** It is important to disable the
            card for proper Plug and Play operation on Windows 95 driver. This
            parameter is enable only when MSDOS only enviroment is used as the
            operating system. This parameter will program the sound card to be
            enable for sound blaster games.

/c:[e/d]    e=enable IDE Port, d=disable IDE Port -- ** If IDE port on this
            sound card is used to connect to cdrom drive, you should enable the
            port first before loading the MSDOS CD-ROM driver.

/j:[e/d]    e=enable joystick, d=disable joystick --- ** If you are playing
            games with joystick connected, you need to enable to use the
            joystick.

/a:xxx      xxx determines the Sound Blaster address port. -- 220,230,240,250
/i:x        x determines the Sound Blaster IRQ -- 2,5,7,10.
/d:x        x determines the DMA channel -- 0,1,3
/b:xxx      xxx determines the MPU-401 address -- 300,310,320,330
/m[e/d/s/x] e=enable MPU-401 with no IRQ, d=disable MPU-401, s=share IRQ with
            audio device, x=MPU-410 IRQ select where x can be 2,5,7,10(A),11(B).

** Note that Under WIndows 95, MPNP.EXE are automatically install to CONFIG.SYS **
** Note that Under Windows 3.11, you have to manually add MPNP.EXE to CONFIG.SYS
   when necessary.

ESSCFG.EXE is an extra MSDOS utilties to configure the sound card's parameters
using a menu. It has similar functions as MPNP.EXE

ESSVOL.EXE s a MSDOS utilties to set the audio volume of sound card. Example,
Wave Volume, CD Volume, Master Volume, etc....
